Healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive. Buy fresh fruits and veggies that are in season when they typically cost less. When not in season, rely on canned and frozen veggies which cost less, last longer, and are just as nutritious as fresh. For expensive protein items, like beef or poultry, buy when they are on sale and look for larger family packs which are usually cheaper per pound. You can freeze some of the meat for another meal. Less expensive, but highly nutritious, protein foods include eggs, peanut butter, and beans (like kidney, black, red, pinto, and garbanzo). During sales, stock up on other long-lasting pantry staples like spaghetti sauce, canned tomatoes, rice, pasta, and chicken/beef broth. Look for sales on bread products too, choosing whole-grain cereals, breads, tortillas, and pastas for added fiber and nutrients. Store brand items typically cost less than name brands.
